Pay quartiles

The workforce split into four equal bands by pay, showing the share of men and women in each.

Pay quartiles divide the workforce into four equal groups ordered by pay, and the reported figure is the proportion of men and of women in each. The distribution is often more revealing than the headline gap: where pay is broadly even inside each quartile, the mean gap is produced not by unequal pay for the same work but by who occupies the upper bands. That is a progression question rather than a payroll one.
