Equal work

Categories of workers

Groups of employees performing equal work or work of equal value, and the level at which reporting is done.

A category of workers is a group performing the same work or work of equal value, defined by the employer on the basis of objective, gender-neutral criteria. Reporting is done at this level, not at company level, which is why a company-wide figure can pass while individual categories breach. Categories are the single most consequential judgement in the whole exercise: draw them too broadly and real differences disappear, too narrowly and every category becomes a special case.
