Equal work means the same or substantially similar work. It is the narrower of the two comparisons the legislation requires — the other being work of equal value — and is usually the easier to establish, because roles with the same title and duties are visibly comparable. Pay differences between employees doing equal work must be explained by objective, gender-neutral factors or corrected.
